North Myrtle Beach High School announced Monday that Perry Woolbright has been hired as the new head coach of the Chiefs football program. Woolbright’s hiring was approved Monday by the Horry County School Board and announced on Wayne White’s Tomahawk Talk on the Chiefs Sports Network that evening.

White said that “Woolbright originally joined the North Myrtle Beach High School football program in 2010 and left in 2014 after four seasons. While coach he lost 22 games but was 9-4 in his last year. He also laid the groundwork to build a program for other coaches after him. He went to Batesburg-Leesville, then Lexington and then Clover, which was his alma mater.”

“This is his second homecoming. He is a great coach and family man and someone who endeared himself to this area,” White said.

Athletic director Tony Heilbronn said that a search committee had been working to find a coach since the job opened last November. “As we did the search and talked with people, one name that people wanted to endorse was Perry. He was well liked and people in this community threw support behind him. We heard so many positive things about him from others. We listened and this was what the search committee felt was best for NMB High School.”

White stated that Woolbright was an offensive coach but also looked at how defense made his program whole.

Woolbright has spent fifteen years as a head coach and has been in the playoffs in twelve of those years. He won a state championship at Batesburg-Leesville.

“He’s done very well wherever he’s been and we are excited to see what he can do for us,” Heilbronn concluded.”
