What is special about the number 47? The Ecotots in Kim Hollaway’s kindergarten class at Ocean Drive Elementary School learned that was the number of presidents that have led the United States of America since its founding 250 years ago. The Ecotot Committee from Yaupon Garden Club enjoyed sharing presidential history with the students during their Ecotot meeting on Friday, February 20, 2026.

Lynne Payne led a discussion of several presidents and shared their contributions.  She explained that Theodore Roosevelt was instrumental in forming the National Parks we enjoy visiting.  She showed the Ecotots a picture of Mount Rushmore on which is carved the images of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt.  YGC member Margaret Graham provided a picture of Mount Rushmore to color. She explained that several presidents have their image on a coin. A packet with a penny for Abraham Lincoln, a nickel for Thomas Jefferson, a dime for Franklin D. Roosevelt and a quarter for George Washington was distributed to the students by YGC members Donna Belski, Margaret Graham, Sue Hagen, Bette Hurt, Joy Murray and Lynne Payne. The students also received tiny bears from YGC member Bette Hurt to remember the contribution of national parks by Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.

The students entertained the YGC Ecotot Committee by singing a song they learned to help them understand the value of each coin. Everyone enjoyed recognizing our Presidents of the United States of America.

Happy 250th birthday, America!
