The Ellen Taylor Foundation continues to make a lasting impact on the Junior Shag dance community, supporting young dancers not only with travel assistance but also through one of its most beloved initiatives—the Free Dance Shoe Program.

This July, during the 2025 Junior SOS, the foundation distributed 199 pairs of dance shoes to youth ranging in age from just 4 years old to 20. For many of these dancers, proper footwear is an essential but costly part of pursuing their passion. Thanks to the generosity of the foundation, no child left the event without the chance to step onto the dance floor with confidence.

Following the event, children from across the Southeast sent heartfelt thank-you cards, handwritten notes, and colorful drawings to Ms. Ellen Taylor, the foundation’s founder. Their words of gratitude reflected not only excitement for their new shoes but also the values that the foundation encourages—respect, hard work and appreciation.

“The Free Dance Shoe Program is about more than shoes,” said a spokesperson for the foundation. “It’s about investing in extraordinary kids who love this dance, and making sure every child has the tools to grow in confidence and community.”

For decades, Ellen Taylor has been a driving force in preserving and growing the shag dance tradition. Through her foundation, she ensures that children who share that love of dance are supported, encouraged, and given opportunities to shine.

This year’s Junior SOS was another resounding success, highlighting not only the joy of shag dancing but also the strength of a community that rallies behind its youth. Thanks to the Ellen Taylor Foundation, the future of shag dancing is in good hands—and good shoes.
