The Kiwanis Club of North Myrtle Beach–Little River and Little River United Methodist Church (LRUMC), in partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank, continue making a difference in the fight against food insecurity through their no-cost food distribution program serving Little River and the surrounding communities.
Held rain or shine every second and fourth Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., or until food runs out, the program is now in its second year and serves approximately 176 families each month—reaching an estimated 6,300 individuals over the past year. Families receive fresh produce, canned goods, frozen meats, pasta, eggs, bread, pastries and boxed milk.
“This partnership helps close the gap for families facing food insecurity in our community,” said Susan Jones, Lt. Governor of the Carolinas District Kiwanis and LRUMC representative. Sandy Jack, Kiwanis Treasurer and Food Distribution Chair, added, “Feeding children and their families in our community is not only a blessing for them, but equally a blessing for us.”
Signage at Highway 17 and Mineola Avenue directs guests to the distribution site, where handicap parking is available nearby. Children attending also receive a free book through Kiwanis’ literacy initiative.
In tandem with the food distribution, LRUMC’s Dignity Program offers showers, laundry services, clothing, hygiene kits and hot meals. Reverend Tony Adams noted that the church continues its outreach each Friday through the Shepherd’s Table community meal, served from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Together, Kiwanis Club of North Myrtle Beach-Little River, Little River United Methodist Church and the Lowcountry Food Bank remain dedicated to serving the community with food, dignity and hope.
