The NMB High School Lady Chiefs volleyball team remained undefeated with an 18-0 record after last week’s string of seven wins, two in region play and a 5-0 record in the Panther Invitational Tournament.
The Chiefs opened last week with a home victory over Carolina Forest on Tuesday evening, a 3-0 battle with one of their tougher region foes. The Chiefs took the first set 25-18, and then won the next two sets 25-20, 25-20.
As usual the Chiefs two outside hitters Lilly Loeswick and Clara Cloninger did the most damage, with Loeswick getting 22 kills and Cloninger adding 16 killls. The Chiefs also had nine aces in the match, and Katlyn Powers and Cloninger had 20 and 16 digs respectively. Mikayla Altena had 42 assists in the match.
Last Thursday the Chiefs were home again, this time entertaining the Lady Sharks of St. James high School. They won the match 3-0, (25-17, 25-11, 25-16). Loeswick had 14 kills in the match and Cloninger 12, but 8 Chiefs had at least one kill on the statistic sheet. The Chiefs also had 10 aces in the match. Altena’s 32 assists topped all other Chiefs players.
Last Saturday the Chiefs played in the Panther Invitational Tournament at Batesburg- Leesville High School.
The Chiefs won the tournament title with five straight match wins. They beat Newberry 2-0 (25-10, 25-5). They then beat White Knoll 2-0 (25-13, 25-9). In their third match they dominated Brookland Cayce 2-0 (25-8, 25-8).
Match number four was with Lugoff-Elgin. The Chiefs dropped the first set 19-25 but then won the next two sets 25-22 and 15-11. The Chiefs ended the tournament with a win over a Cardinal Newman team with a 25-3 record. The Chiefs won the title 25-22, 26-24.
The Chiefs have another busy week this week. They were away at Myrtle Beach on Tuesday and are at Conway tonight, both region matches. The Chiefs then face their biggest challenge of the season as they travel to Dorman tomorrow for the Dorman Tournament of Champions. The tournament features some of the best volleyball teams in the state in the two-day tournament.
