Stella McDowell created God’s Gifts in 2012 and has spent the last seven years helping people who need assistance with every day items.  God’s Gifts is a nonprofit community outreach program that depends upon donations of furniture, clothing, food and more to provide for people throughout Horry County. On Saturday, Nov. 23, McDowell and volunteers set up the community Thanksgiving dinner gifts for 150 families who were unable to afford a family holiday dinner.  Each family received a turkey, freshly grown collards and sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, vegetables and cranberry sauce. City of Loris employees can be seen painting the new street light pole in the foreground and others are installing a new pole in the background. The city will have Main Street lights up by next week for the Christmas season holidays. A new Christmas tree will be up at the courtyard on Main this week.

Register now for the city’s January 21-March 12 Ocean Rescue Junior Lifeguard program at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC). Classes are Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the center. The program focuses on people ages 9-15 who enjoy the beach and ocean, and who would like to learn water safety and lifesaving skills, including CPR, while also participating in fun games and activities. The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs varsity football season ended this past Thursday night on the road in the second round of the state 4-A playoffs to Myrtle Beach by a final score of 35-27. The 2019 SHIVER FOR THE SHELTER Golf Tournament, presented by Slimbo Events and PrintGraphix, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Arcadian Shores Golf Club in Myrtle Beach. Richard C. “Dickie” Talbert, Jr., 71, of N. Myrtle Beach, following a brief illness, passed away peacefully surrounded with love on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at MUSC in Charleston. Dickie was born on Nov. 14, 1947, in Albemarle, N.C., and was the son of the late Richard C. Talbert and the late Margaret Rose Wilhoit Talbert. Joyce Somerset, 87, of North Myrtle Beach, died on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, at her home. Born on Feb. 12, 1932, in Lincolnton, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Hillard and Virginia (Kale) Saine. She is survived by her daughter, Billie Martin of North Myrtle Beach, and two grand dogs, Grayson and Piper. Joyce retired from AT&T after 35 years of service with perfect attendance. Bettie Gail Stevens Altman of Loris passed to her heavenly home on  Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019.
