The Loris Recreation football season began on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10:15 a.m. with the Little Lions roaring onto the field to take on the Aynor Blue Jackets.  The Little Lions cheerleaders are on the sidelines with pom poms in hand, sporting their uniforms and cheering for the team as the crowd gathered to watch the game. The recreation teams began with the Little Lions, 7-8 year olds, taking the field and the cheerleaders primary concern was to roar up the crowd at the 10:15 a.m. game.  When the field was cleared at 11:30 a.m. the 9-12 year olds football …

The Loris Varsity Football welcomed the Carolina Forest Panthers to Loris this past Friday night. The 10th ranked Panthers were more than the Lions could handle. The Loris Chamber of Commerce presented the Miss Loris Bog-Off Festival Pageant on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Loris High School auditorium beginning at 1 p.m. The emcees for the pageant were Greg and Morina Martin.  Greg welcomed everyone to the pageant then turned the program over to Morina.  She introduced the judges giving a brief history of each one.  Greg introduced each contestant, and Morina presented the question to the future queens. Violet Rollings Boyd, age 76, of Loris passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019, at her home in Little River. Mrs. Boyd was born on March 17, 1943, in Jefferson to the late Bennett “Jack” Rollings and the late Ruth Jenkins Rollings.  Survivors include her two brothers, Jimmy Rollings and wife Mary Ann of Lancaster and Gary L. Rollings and wife Barbara of Kershaw; and her nephew, Ronald Brown of Little River. Mrs. Boyd was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Aubrey Boyd, and her sister, Lucille James.             Jon Ellis Tregarthen, 76, of Little River died on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.             Born on Sept. 13, 1943, in San Pedro, Calif., he was the son of the late Harry and Gladys Brown Tregarthen.             He was a loving husband and father as well as a faithful and active member of Grace Christian Fellowship.  He loved his church and church family.   Being “Mr. Fix-it” was a favorite pastime.             Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Theresia “Terri” Calhoun Tregarthen; one daughter, Elizabeth Storey (Keith); four sisters, Joan Huston …

Theodore “Ted” Van Weeren, 72, of Longs died on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, at McLeod Seacoast Medical Center in Little River. Born on Sept. 10, 1947, in Holland, he was the son of the late Jacobus and Johanna Van Weeren.  Ted was an accountant and attorney.  He was the recipient of two Emmy Awards for his work at the Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jacqueline “Jackie” Serafin Van Weeren; and three feline companions, Angela, Sabrina and Saffron. Joseph M. Mercurio, beloved husband and father, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 25, 2019, at the age of 83.  Joseph is survived by his four children, Karin, Kenneth, Patti-Jo and Peggi, and his four grandchildren, Cameron, Carson, Mary and Hannah. Joseph was born to Joseph and Marge Mercurio on March 20, 1936. He attended high school in Bloomfield where he met a future nursing student named Nancy.
