The Loris City Council met on Monday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. Todd Harrelson, council member and mayor-pro tem, called the meeting to order asking Joan Gause to provide the invocation and the pledge of allegiance was recited by all. The Council members present were Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Terrence Hardee, Mike Suggs and Jan Vescovi. Crossway Church held its annual Critter Cooking dinner on Saturday, Feb. 4. The line was out the door at this event with more than 300 guests who came to taste the foods of the land. The menu consisted of turkey burgers, sausage, hash, lasagna, chili, beaver stew and wontons, wild turkey Brunswick stew, catfish, squirrel, rabbit and more. In previous years they have had alligator, quail and crab. This year no one had these to share. Elderberry syrup has become a popular staple in homes in the Loris area; it is used to help lessen the effects of the flu, a virus, Epstein Barr Virus and much more. Christina Lee Booth, known by friends as Chrissie, has used her family recipe that she has perfected to make elderberry syrup that sells in local businesses by the pint or quart size jars. The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs wrestling team took a good first step in the Region 4A team competition last Saturday at the North Myrtle Beach High School gym. As the region’s regular season champion, the Chiefs earned a first round bye and waited for the winner of the first team competition between Midland Valley and Hilton Head High School. Midland Valley beat Hilton Head by three points but quickly met a tough Chiefs squad. The North Myrtle Beach Lady Chiefs got some revenge for an earlier loss to Wilson High School by upsetting the 4A regions only undefeated team by a 56-54 score at North Myrtle Beach on senior night. The Lady Chiefs Jermaisha Griffin got the first two of her 20 point night with a rebound basket following the opening tip of the game, Jordan Berger scored on a break and Janaii Boone’s jumper quickly gave North Myrtle Beach a 6-0 lead. James Edison “Ed” Wooten, 61, of Loris passed away on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019, at McLeod Seacoast in Little River following an illness. Mr. Wooten was born on Feb. 19, 1957, in Loris to the late Bill Giles Wooten Sr. and the late Mary Faith Douglass Wooten. Mr. Wooten worked as a truck driver for most of his life, most recently with Powell’s Tire & Axle. He was a member of the Loris First Presbyterian Church. Susan Elizabeth Rhodes was born on Dec. 4, 1951, in Lincolnton, N.C., to Robert Wilson and Helen Beam Rhodes. On Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019, surrounded by loving family, Susan began her new life in heaven after waging a two-and-a-half-year courageous bout with pancreatic cancer. Susan was a warrior princess throughout her life. Her strength and generosity touched so many lives and we will always remember her legacy of love and happiness. She graduated from Lincolnton High School, attended Lenior-Rhyne University and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in English and her Juris Doctor. …

Grace Letha Gipe Elson, 95, widow of William Owens Elson, died on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019, at her home. Born on Nov. 25, 1923, in Fort Collins, Col., she was a daughter of the late Guilford Gipe and the late Dopha Alzada Hamill Gipe. She graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School and a secretarial college in Sacramento, Calif., and went on to work as a secretary at Mather Field for the Army Air Corps during World War II. There she met and married PFC William Elson on March 3, 1944. After the war they settled near his home in Beaver …

Arlene R. Kohler was born on Oct. 3, 1927 and passed away on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, in North Myrtle Beach. She was born in Berks County, Pa. Arlene was a daughter of Clarence T. Trupe and Roberta (Eberly) Trupe and the widow of Joseph Kohler Sr.She retired from Bass Pro Shops in Myrtle Beach. Surviving are two brothers, two sons, one step-daughter, 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and too many people who called her mom or grandmom to count.
