Resilience amid the ashes of Easter Sunday church fire

By Ruben Lowman

The congregation of Lake Swamp Baptist Church in Loris turned a moment of sudden devastation into a testament of faith this past Easter weekend following a significant fire that broke out on the morning of Saturday, April 4.

Horry County Fire Rescue and the Loris Fire Department were dispatched to the church property in the 4000 block of Highway 917 at approximately 10:59 a.m. after smoke began billowing from the educational building.

In a move that Pastor Dewayne Nobles described as a “blessing from God” the fire occurred while members were already gathered on-site for a graveside remembrance service for a late member of the church. This presence allowed for an immediate alert to emergency services and likely prevented the total loss of the entire church complex as crews worked quickly to contain the heavy flames that were primarily located in the fellowship hall and the educational wing.

Despite the lingering scent of smoke and the visible charring of the fellowship hall the church leadership refused to cancel their most sacred service of the year this past weekend.

On Easter Sunday morning the pews remained empty as the congregation moved their worship outdoors beneath the spring sun. Standing just feet away from the damaged structures Pastor Nobles delivered a message of hope and endurance to both those in attendance and a wider audience watching via live-stream.

Nobles emphasized that the physical buildings were not the true heart of the ministry and the timing of the event provided a profound backdrop for the Easter message of rebirth and life beyond trial.

The community of Loris has rallied around Lake Swamp Baptist as they begin the difficult process of assessing the damage and planning for reconstruction. The fire also serves as a stark reminder of the quick response and dedication of the local volunteer and professional fire crews who braved the heat to save the main sanctuary.

As the spring air settled over the charred grass on Sunday morning the sentiment shared by the congregation was one of forward motion rather than mourning.

Pastor Nobles noted that the change in seasons and the emergence of the sun symbolized a new chapter for the church declaring that they would no longer be living in winter but moving toward a season of recovery and renewal.
