Horry County Fire and Rescue (HCFR) were called to the 10000 block of West Highway 19 in the Loris area at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 13, in response to a car accident involving an ejection and entrapment. The Horry County Police Department provided assistance to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Upon their arrival, HCFR evaluated the situation where a vehicle had overturned and collided with a house, resulting in one ejection and one entrapment.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Michael McSpadden disclosed the identities of the victims. Two rising seniors from Green Sea Floyds High School tragically lost their lives in the early morning crash. Chance Huggins, 16, passed away at the scene, while Carson Blake Hatcher, 17, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation.

Carson Hatcher’s father, Chris Hatcher, shared a bit of Carson’s life. “A little bit about Carson, he was a very very talented kid from an early age,” Chris wrote. “He loved racing remote control cars and he won many races and championships.” He shared that around age 3, Carson grew up at ‘our’ Native American tribes Pau Wau which is in Aynor South Carolina with the Waccamaw Indian people. “As he grew up we started traveling to big Pow Wau’s where he became a much respected grass dancer known as the healing dance.” Chris continued, “He won many competitions and he also loved dancing for the ones who can no longer dance (the elders).” Carson is featured in two digital South Carolina Social Studies books in his regalia.

“Carson also was a very talented drummer, both the Native drum and a set of drums,” said Chris. “He had natural ability playing the drums and strumming the guitar.” At GSFHS Carson was a member of the marching band.

Carson was a lovable young man that was very talented.  He loved eating waffles with peanut butter and syrup. He was a Die-Hard Clemson Tiger fan and enjoyed hanging out with his friends.

“Just this past weekend while we were on vacation,” said Chris. “He was asked to play the drums for a band at the campground.”

Both Carson and Chance are surrounded by numerous loving family members and friends who will deeply miss these two teenagers. The family of Chance Huggins has graciously chosen not to comment on Chance. The only request from the families is to keep them in your prayers.
