This year, Horry County Schools (HCS) classrooms are actually going to be leaning on an AI program for assistance, and officials and educators said it should only enhance students’ learning experience. There’s been a lot of talk about how AI programs like ChatGPT can disrupt education by doing the students’ work for them.
The initiative, named Magic School, aims to provide all the educational advantages of ChatGPT while eliminating its disadvantages.
This is an AI platform designed specifically for educational settings. Unlike ChatGPT or other artificial intelligence platforms, it does not encompass all the general features. Instead, it offers specialized functionalities intended for use by both teachers and students within the classroom.
Educators have the opportunity to utilize Magic School for quickly creating assignments. It can be employed for lesson plans, materials for small groups, quizzes and flashcards. Additionally, Magic School is adaptive, providing teachers with the capability to tailor learning experiences for each individual student.
This will enhance the efficiency of teachers. It will streamline their planning processes. It will also transform their approach to differentiation. This tool will handle numerous tasks that would typically require teachers several hours to complete. Consider the challenge of developing 28 distinct worksheets or activities for students within a single classroom. What this tool offers is the ability to differentiate based on the specific needs and ability levels of the students.
Although educators commenced utilizing the program on Monday, August 18, the intention is for students to eventually gain access to Magic School as well, both at home and within the classroom, enabling them to receive instructional feedback in real time.
A student has the ability to either compose directly on the platform or upload a written document, which will then provide them with precise, targeted feedback regarding their writing in relation to grade-level standards. This feedback aims to assist them in expressing their ideas more clearly, organizing their thoughts more effectively, and ensuring that all grammatical requirements are fulfilled.
It is thought that this will prove to be extremely advantageous, given that the classroom accommodates a large number of students. I am able to support one student while the others focus on their tasks, employing that program to help them with writing, capitalization, and implementing required corrections.
In contrast to ChatGPT, this program does not have the ability to perform any of a student’s actual tasks on their behalf.
HCSD students currently lack access as they must first undergo extensive training regarding the programs and the potential risks associated with the misuse of AI in general. The expectation is that students will start utilizing Magic School within this year.
