Neighbors in Windy Hill are coming together for a good cause — and a good time — as Mike and Della Ellis host a Golf Cart Poker Run to raise money for Teen Angels, a program of the Rotary Club of Little River.
Mike, a cancer survivor, says giving back has become especially important to him. “This community has supported me and now I want to support it,” he said. “Teen Angels does such important work and we’re excited to help.”
Teen Angels was founded in 2007 by Renee Hembree, wife of Senator Greg Hembree and a long time Rotarian of the Rotary Club of Little River, to provide assistance to homeless students at North Myrtle Beach High School. Since becoming a service project of the Rotary Club of Little River in 2019, Teen Angels has grown to help students and families facing emergencies or unexpected challenges, from housing and food insecurity to school needs.
The Poker Run will send participants cruising between five local restaurants and bars in golf carts, drawing a card at each stop to build their poker hand. Entry is $20 in advance or $25 on the day of, with extra cards available for $5 at each location. The best hand at the end wins a prize and the fun continues with a 50/50 raffle, giveaways and food. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at the final stop. Don’t have a golf cart? No problem — one will be provided.
The event promises plenty of laughs, good food and time with neighbors, all while raising money to help local students succeed.
“Every dollar makes a difference for a child right here in our community,” said Ellis. “We hope folks will come out, have some fun and know they’re doing something meaningful, too.”
Sign up online at RotaryClubofLittleRiver.org in advance for $20, or arrive at Oscar’s Restaurant at 11 a.m. on event day and pay $25. Checks can also be made payable to The Rotary Club of Little River and mailed to P.O. Box 2065, Little River S.C. 29566.
