Horry County’s newest historical marker underscores the significance of the Green Sea community. On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the Horry County Historic Preservation Commission unveiled the Green Sea Historic Marker at the intersection of Green Sea Road and Mitchell Sea Road.

The origins of the community date back to 1784, when William Norton was awarded 200 acres of land, which includes the location of the historical marker. By the year 1787, Norton had enlarged his property to 2,000 acres, resulting in the area being called “Norton’s Crossroads.” At that time, the community’s center featured both a meeting house and a mill.

By the 1850’s, the name changed to “Blanton’s Crossroads” following the establishment of a post office. Over time, the community was referred to by several different names before ultimately sharing ‘Green Sea’ with the larger township.

This marker is part of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History’s official historic marker program. This program is part of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History’s program, with the county aiming to place two markers annually.
