The North Myrtle Beach High School Lady Chiefs solidified their number one rank in 5A basketball with two more wins last week.

The Chiefs first win was a 63-23 win over Mullins in a MLK tournament held last Monday at Marion.

The Chiefs led the Lady Auctioneers 16-10 after the first quarter of play and increased their lead to 29-16 at halftime. The Chiefs then held Mullins to 7 points in the second half while scoring 34 points for the win.

Jurnee Blye led the Chiefs scoring with 17 points. Sophie Powell scored 16 points, Aubree Anglin had 15 points, and Maddie Vereen scored 13 points.

Last Friday the Lady Chiefs went to Myrtle Beach for the first of two region meetings with the Lady Seahawks and came away with a 43-21 victory in one of their two rivalry games.

This game was really the tale of two halves. The Chiefs shut down the Seahawks in the first quarter, allowing them one basket with 6:15 on the first quarter clock. The defense kept the Seahawks away from the basket and sometimes away from the midcourt line.

Jurnee Blye scored the first points for the Chiefs on a rebound putback and Katlyn Powers jumper made it 4-0 before the Myrtle Beach points. Blye’s second basket and a steal and layup by Maddie Vereen made it 8-0. Powell followed with a layup about halfway through the quarter. Two more baskets by Blye and it was 15-2.

Maddie Vereen scored on a drive to the basket, and a timeout held so that the PA announcer could mention that with Vereen’s basket she reached 1,000 points in her career. Aubree Anglin closed out the scoring with a three-pointer and 20-2 lead after one quarter of play.

The Chiefs Vereen hit a free throw and a layup for a 23-4 score to open the second quarter. With two and a half minutes left in the half, Anglin made a three-point play, Vereen hit two free throws, Anglin one free throw, and Vereen made two more free throws. A drive and Seahawk foul on a drive resulted in two more Vereen free throws for a 33-6 lead. Blye’s jumper on a rebound gave the Chiefs a 35-7 halftime lead.

The Chiefs third quarter began one of the season’s strangest for the Chiefs. They were outscored 7-0 and could not get any offense going. They missed shots, committed turnovers on both ends of the court and the scoreboard reflected it, 35-11 after three quarters.

The Chiefs continued their slump in the fourth quarter. Myrtle Beach added seven points in the quarter and the Chiefs outscored them 8-7 with Blye and Ke’Aisha Bryant each scoring four points. The Chiefs won the game, but it was far from their normal performance, even with a 43-20 score.

Vereen topped Chiefs scoring with 13 points.  Blye had 12 points. Anglin scored 7 points and Bryant got 6 points.

This week the Lady Chiefs will follow a trip to Conway on Tuesday with a home game tomorrow night against Socastee.
