The NMB High School Lady Chiefs basketball team finished the regular season with wins over St. James and Carolina Forest and claimed another 6AAAAA region championship.
The Chiefs started their final week with an away game victory over St. James on Tuesday, February 10, by a 61-32 score in a game at St. James.
The Chiefs were led by Maddie Vereen’s 16 points. Jurnee Blye scored 14 points and Sophie Powell added 10 points. Ke’Aisha had 9 points. Blye also had 10 rebounds and 6 steals. The Chiefs had 20 steals as a team.
The Chiefs finished the week with another away game, this time a makeup game with Carolina Forest last Thursday at Carolina Forest. The Chiefs got off to a strong start with a 36-15 first half lead and continued their strong finish to the season with a 62-42 victory.
Vereen and Powell each scored 18 points to lead the scoring. Blye scored 14 points and all three of the Chiefs leading scorers shot over 50 percent.
The Chiefs finished their regular schedule with 22 straight wins and the number one ranked 5A girls basketball team in the state.
Lady Chiefs coach Heather Kearney was expecting a tough final week.
“The final week of the regular season was challenging,” said Kearney. “Playing two high caliber teams in St. James and Carolina Forest on the road. I was very proud of our team’s focus and toughness to finish off the regular season in a strong fashion.
The state play-offs begin a brand new season. We will work hard preparing and getting ready for whomever we will face.
The Chiefs had a first round bye in the state championship tournament and play the winner of the Conway vs. Westwood game on Saturday, February 21, at North Myrtle Beach.
