Ecotots learn about weeds in their garden

They say a weed is simply a flower our of place. The Ecotots in Mrs. Holloway’s class at Ocean Drive Elementary School discovered this at their Friday, April 17, 2026, meeting with the ladies of the Yaupon Garden Club.

YGC member Lynne Payne reviewed their yearly projects before reading a delightful story about Danny the Dandelion. Most of us try to rid our yards of this pesky weed, but it is actually well loved by pollinators. They say that dandelion leaves are quite tasty in a salad.  The students were shown several samples of weeds and told the best way to remove each, root and all, from the ground.

With the help of YGC members Margaret Graham, Sue Hagen, Joy Murray and Lynne Payne, the students had an opportunity to dig up the weeds in their Ecotot garden. The garden was so neat and tidy afterwards. The Budding Ecotots were quite proud of their part in beautifying the Ocean Drive Elementary School grounds.

Upon returning to the classroom, the students were surprised with the gift of a beach sand bucket to use during their beach day in May. It was a fun day in which they learned that weeds can have the prettiest flowers.

May all your weeds be wildflowers!
