During the March 4 City Council meeting, City Council recognized and presented certificates of completion to North Myrtle Beach residents who graduated from the 2019 North Myrtle Beach Citizens Academy. Academy participants learned about work performed by city departments, their projects and some of the challenges they face. They also toured key city facilities. The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce CVB is announcing R.W. Wood’s General Store as the March 2019 Business of the Month. R.W. Wood began his business in 1956 and they have been at their present location at Nixon’s Crossroads since 1960. The General Store originally sold almost everything anyone could need. From groceries to hardware, they had it. In 2001, the addition of a grill was added and R.W.’s son, Richard, became the operator of the breakfast and lunch counter. Although we lost R.W. The World Famous Blue Crab Festival has received three separate awards from the South Carolina Festival and Events Association’s (SCFEA) 2019 Festival & Event Planner’s Conference. Loris Elementary School held a parade on Friday, March 1, to celebrate and bring awareness in a fun way for children to want to read books. LES supports the National Reading Month every year with a new way to share interest in reading. This year they celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 114th birthday one day early. Because his birthday landed on a Saturday, all elementary schools promoted the program on Friday. Voters in Loris will select the successor to the late Mayor Henry L. Nichols in a special election to be held on Tuesday, May 28, with the winner filling the office for only the remainder of this year. According to Dena Huggins of the Horry County Registration & Elections Office, state law requires a special election to fill an unexpired term of office if, when the vacancy occurs, there are more than 180 days left in that term before the next general election. A celebration of life and a tribute for Mayor Henry L. “Buck” Nichols was held on Monday, March 4, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at Loris First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Osment officiating. The pews were filled to capacity leaving standing room only with family, friends, council members, politicians and personnel who worked closely with Nichols. City workers, Loris Police Department and the Loris Fire Department represented the city’s mourning of a man who was loved by many. Barry Brooks, athletic director for LHS, hosted the banquet awards dinner at the school cafeteria on Tuesday, Feb. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. Dinner was catered by the IGA in Loris with chicken, green beans, macaroni and cheese, a roll and banana pudding.
