McMillan recognized for his recycling

The Horry County Solid Waste Authority recently recognized Little River resident Thomas McMillan as the “Caught Green Handed” recipient for the month of January. “The ‘Caught Green Handed’ recognition is presented monthly to an Horry County resident caught in the act of recycling” stated Esther Murphy, Director of Recycling and Corporate Affairs for the Solid Waste Authority. “It’s the Solid Waste Authority’s way of recognizing and thanking citizens who have made the effort to recycle. Hatley appointed to board

Former mayor of North Myrtle Beach, Marilyn Hatley, has been appointed to the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank Board by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. Her inclusion on the board reflects a gubernatorial appointment, as the Governor of South Carolina appoints two directors to the bank’s board. The purpose of the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank is to select and assist in financing major qualified projects by providing loans and other financial assistance for constructing and improving highway and transportation facilities necessary for public purposes, including economic development.

Council discusses FEMA, jury trials, training and baseball registration

By Kaye Collins Due to inclement weather the Loris City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, Feb. 5, was rescheduled to  Monday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m.  Present at the meeting were Mayor Mike Suggs, Councilmembers Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Andrea Coleman, Kelli Gerald, Carroll D. Padgett, Jr. and Tonya Sykes. Also present were Acting City Administrator, Angel Neighbours; Code Enforcement Director, Meredith Holmes, City Attorney, John Zelinski; City Clerk, Melinda Price; Loris Police Lt., Larry Williams; and Loris Recreation Director, Woody Hinson. Chamber celebrates new headquarters

By Kaye Collins Loris Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Samantha Norris announced that the chamber’s headquarters has relocated to 3940 Railroad Ave. in downtown Loris. The chamber officially transitioned to the new building the day prior to Thanksgiving, with Norris and Executive Assistant Stacy Ginther, the two staff members present on-site, working tirelessly to ensure the new facility was operational. The chamber’s newly established headquarters covers an area of 8,000 square feet, which is almost three times larger than its previous location at 4242 Main Street. Loris City Hall and administrative offices were closed on Monday, Feb. 2, and operated on a delayed schedule, opening at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026. By Kaye Collins Although Loris does not have a permanent “Winter Wonderland” attraction, the city transformed into a natural winter wonderland on Feb. 1, 2026, when an unusual winter storm deposited 7 inches of snow in the region which was the highest accumulation recorded in Horry County during this week’s storm. Residents of Loris, Green Sea and Longs areas delighted in the snowfall that began late afternoon on Saturday, Jan. 31, with the heaviest accumulation occurring overnight into Sunday, Feb. 1.
