On Monday, March 16, Lou Palm of North Myrtle Beach announced his intention to run for the District 1 seat on the Horry County School Board.
“Since joining the Army at the age of 18, working as an emergency response exercise designer for the Department of Energy, the FBI, and the California Office of Homeland Security, and serving as an American Red Cross and Team Rubicon disaster responder, I have tried to give back to the folks and country which supported me.”
“I have been a resident of North Myrtle Beach for 20 years. Two of my grandchildren graduated from North Myrtle Beach High School after attending the elementary and middle schools here. From our family’s experience, their school years where affected by COVID restrictions.”
“I believe the 4,500 students in our five District 1 schools are the constituents to be served. Education is not a linear exercise of a child getting on the bus, attending school and going home. Our students need a three tiered team; the family actively supporting them at home, the schools providing competent teachers, coaches and counselors, and finally the community with friends, employers and safe extra-learning facilities such as libraries and churches.”
“My goal is to enhance the education experience by talking with students, what do they think is lacking, speaking with teachers and aiding them in moving forward needs changes they identify, and by ensuring the community has the opportunity to know how their school tax dollars are being spent.”
“As a retired resident, spending time in the presence of students, teachers and community members will be the only focal point of my board tenure.”
