Waterway Spring Art Show is opening soon

By Bonnie McIver

The Waterway Art Association (WAA) announces its Spring Art Show and Sale Monday, April 20, through Saturday, April 25, at the Sunset River Gallery in Calabash, N.C. The 35th annual judged exhibit features painters from the greater Calabash region of the Carolinas. A raffle of original art raises scholarship funds for aspiring college bound art students.

This year’s judge is Wilmington artist and teacher Todd Carignan. Todd teaches at the Cameron Art Museum, has judged numerous competitions, and shows in galleries throughout the country. Primarily working in oil, he specializes in figures, portraits and land and seascapes. In 2021, his work was accepted in the coveted Artfields competition in Lake City, S.C.

Awards totaling up to $2,000 will be presented during the opening reception Monday evening, April 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sunset River Gallery at 10283 Beach Drive in Calabash.

The awards are made possible through the generous support of local businesses. The public is invited to attend.

Artists will find show information and registration details on the waterwayart.org website.

Entrance fee is $40 for members and $75 for non-members. Registration deadline is Saturday, April 11.

The Sunset River Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. In addition to the Monday evening reception, the gallery will be open Thursday evening, April 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. for live “Jaz Night”.

Acrylic painter, Christine Brubaker, won first place in WAA’s 2025 show for “Peace at Kindred Spirit”, a popular spot in the Bird Island Sanctuary in Sunset Beach, N.C.
