Legislative Update Week 18

Overview The House gaveled to a close this week after dozens of bills and the Sine Die Resolution passed both the House and Senate. This was the first year of a two-year session that focused primarily on transformative education reform, presenting a balanced and efficient budget, solutions for Santee Cooper, and the pro-life ‘Heartbeat’ legislation. Although regular session has ended, we will continue to work over the next few weeks in conference committees. We will return in two weeks for a special session to discuss Santee Cooper, vote on the budget, and receive any vetoes from Governor McMaster. We passed …

Peter Joseph Quintano

Peter Joseph Quintano, 99, of Loris passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at McLeod Loris Hospital. He was born on Nov. 3, 1919, in Bari, Italy, to the late John Joseph Quintano and the late Pauline Carnocchio Quintano. Mr. Quintano served his country with courage, honor and dignity in the U.S. Army during World War II, after which he worked as a master butcher in New Jersey where he owned and operated his own butcher shop. He loved the Yankees and the New York Giants, but had a passion for basketball and volunteered as a youth coach for many …

Emily Pendleton Hughes

Emily Pendleton Hughes, 49, of Little River passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019, from metastatic breast cancer.  She was born on Dec. 16, 1969 in Atlanta, Ga. to Pamela Permenter and Jonathan Patrick Hopping.  She was married to Kevin Mooney, who predeceased her in 2002, and was subsequently married to Kevin Hughes, her husband of seventeen years at the time of her death. Emily was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.  She loved her family, especially her two sons, her granddaughter, grandson and her three nieces.  She was the ideal of motherly love, and her hugs would warm …

Support Trojans in playoffs

Congratulations to the Green Sea Floyds High School Varsity Softball team on defeating Cross High School Trojans this past week by a score of 21-0 to win the District VIII Championship. The Lady Trojans went on to defeat Palmetto Scholars Academy on Saturday by a score of 23-0 to advance in the playoffs to play the Lake View Lady Wild Gators. The Lady Trojans lost in an away game to the Lady Wild Gators by a score of 11-5 but will play a home playoff game against the Branchville High School Lady Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, May 8, at 6 …

NMB Chamber names Waterway Furniture May Legacy Business

The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce that Waterway Furniture Company has been selected as the May Legacy Business of the Month. Waterway Furniture was founded by the late J.B. and Josephine Livingston in May 1956. The business has operated continually for the past 63 years. The current owner, J.R. Jordan, first started working at Waterway Furniture as a salesman at age 19. “GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club member, Debbie Ritter presented a club check in the amount of $1,000 as a contribution to Grand Strand Blue Star Mothers. Connie Muirhead, president of Grand Strand Blue Star Mothers, received the donation. Mayor signs proclamation denoting tourism week

Prior to the May 6 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, council members met in executive session for a legal briefing regarding the Sandridge Development Agreement. Council took no action. During the May 6 meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented a proclamation naming the week of May 5-11 as National Travel & Tourism week in North Myrtle Beach. Mayor Hatley said the city of North Myrtle Beach welcomes an estimated 4 million visitors annually and visitor spending is more than $467 million annually. Visitors pay more than $5.8 million in local taxes. Travel to and within the United States generated more …
