Boys, girls cross country teams finish in All-County meet

The North Myrtle Beach High School boys and girls varsity cross country teams finished in fourth place at last week’s county championship at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex. The Chiefs teams ran against seven other teams in the girls competition and nine teams in the boys race. All races were 5K distances. The teams were made up of seven runners per team and race time for each runner was averaged to get team results. Chiefs varsity football falls on the road to No. 9 Hartsville

The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs varsity football program fell on the road this past Friday night to region foe Hartsville by a final score of 24-8. The Chiefs saw senior quarterback Ramsey Lewis return to his starting role after an early season injury, but weren’t able to capitalize on the opportunity, picking up just 133 total yards on offense. North Myrtle Beach opened the game with a first down on their second play of the game, but failed to move the chains any further through their next four drives. William Grady Thomas

William Grady Thomas of Bristol, Tenn., died on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019 with family by his side. He was 85 years old. Dr. Thomas received his B.S. at Appalachian State University, his M.S. from Washington University in St. Louis and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He was the first clinical audiologist in the state of North Carolina. He retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985 where he taught at the School of Medicine’s Division of Otolaryngology. He headed the hospital’s hearing and speech department and did extensive research related to the auditory …

Mary K. Hannell Nance

Mary K. Hannell Nance was born to Thomas and Rosemary Hannell in Lafayette, Indiana, on September 29, 1951. She lived in Delphi, Indiana, from birth into her teenage years until she and her family moved to Albamarle, North Carolina, where she graduated from high school in 1969. She attended Coker College and graduated there in 1973. She briefly lived in Charleston, South Carolina, and worked for Social Services before moving to North Myrtle Beach. She married Paul M. Nance of North Myrtle Beach in 1982 and they were happily married until his death in 1999. She never married again. Mary …

John Richard Slaughter Sr. was born in Florence, Ala., on April 18, 1937.  After graduating from high school in Jackson, Tenn., he attended Auburn University where he graduated in 1962 from the School of Engineering. Dick’s first love, of course, was his family, consisting of his wife, Ann; two sons, John Richard Jr. and Scott Christopher (Malisa); and four grandchildren, Casey, Garrison, Blake and Sam. Joanne S. Fraser

Joanne S. Fraser, 61,  of Little River passed away on Sunday,  Oct. 20, 2019 at home.  Born on May 20, 1958, in Bridgeport, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Sovich Timko. She is survived by her loving daughter, Natasha Goebel (Steven); two sisters, Kim Timko York and Karen Timko Fuller; and one grandchild, Stephanie Elizabeth Goebel.  She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Fraser. Janice J.‘Jenny’ Lee

On Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019, Janice J. “Jenny” Lee, passed away at her home in Longs, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 13, 1950, a daughter of the late Verna and Thomas Orville Clark of Illinois. Jenny volunteered as a den mother in New Haven, Conn., school room mother and served on the Board of Zoning and Appeals for the city of New Haven. She was a member of the New Haven Democratic community and worked tirelessly on the campaigns of Jimmy Carter, Chris Dodd, Rosa DeLauro, Martin Looney, Frank Logue and Ben DeLito. She …

George Rogers “Roger” Humphreys, Jr. of Suffolk, Va., passed away at the age of 77 on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, with family by his side.  He was born on Feb. 16, 1942, in Portsmouth, Va., and has lived in Suffolk, North Myrtle Beach,  North Charleston and Kitty Hawk, N.C.
