Photo by Kaye Collins The first week in December the Loris Chamber of Commerce holds the annual Christmas Parade with crowds gathered along the parade route enjoying the music, floats, seeing the Grinch strutting through the street taunting the kids, local businesses and the grand finale is Santa Claus riding in the bucket on the Loris Fire Department ladder truck. Sadly this year the inclement weather was the determining factor to cancel the Loris Christmas Parade that was scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, beginning at 6 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce cancels Christmas Parade

The Loris Chamber of Commerce announced through Facebook last week that their annual Christmas Parade scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, was cancelled due to the forecasted inclement weather. After several months of preparation and securing the date Mother Nature delivered a rainy and lower temperature for the night.

“While we are disappointed to cancel the Christmas parade so many residents of Loris look forward to attend each year,” explained Samantha Norris, executive director of the chamber, “we are also disappointed.” She shared that a parade takes a tremendous amount of coordination to move safely and successfully, from securing police support from Horry County Police and the Sheriff’s Department while working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) add in the mix coordinating with the parade participants and the float company, it is a large operation that cannot be shifted or moved easily, especially on short notice.

Following the review of the cancellation responses, Norris indicated that the chamber has acknowledged the feedback and has chosen to explore alternative options. Initially, she announced plans for a Christmas in July parade; however, numerous residents expressed their dissatisfaction and preference for a parade that aligns more closely with the seasonal cooler weather, allowing them to fully enjoy a holiday parade. “We tried to reschedule another date in December, but it just will not work out this month,” said Norris, “we tried all days from after the past weekend through the rest of the year, however, no one day would work with all departments necessary to put on the parade.” She stated that the chamber is exploring other options and hopes to come up with something suitable soon. “We appreciate everyone’s understanding,” expressed Norris.

Sadly Georgetown Christmas Parade and Broadway at the Beach Christmas Parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6, were also cancelled due to inclement weather.

Keep an eye on the chamber’s Facebook page for updates about the schedule date.

On Tuesday, December 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., the chamber will be holding it’s Downtown Tuesday event “Small Town Christmas”. Meet the Christmas camel and his companions, enjoy s’mores by the fire, sip on warm cocoa and take in the live entertainment and festive music beneath twinkling lights. The Holiday Market will feature local vendors, treats and gifts — and if we’re fortunate, we might even witness a bit of snow. Bring the family, dress warmly and celebrate the enchantment of Christmas in our small town. This event is sponsored by D.R. Horton.
