Driftwood Garden Club holds first meeting of 2026

By Jill Roman

Driftwood Garden Club members held their January meeting at the North Myrtle Beach Library. After having some afternoon snacks, the program was presented by President Babs Johnston. She taught the group an easy way to sow seeds in the winter and demonstrated the process using milk cartons. She also provided each member with a carton containing seeds already planted which need no maintenance until spring.

Member Joan Schuster presented her floral arrangement “For the Birds,”. a gorgeous floral arrangement with flowers from her yard. The plant of the month was Hellebore (Lenten Rose). Hellebores are one of the South’s most reliable winter plants, offering color and structure when much of the garden is resting. Hellebores were traditionally grown in monastery gardens and symbolize resilience, patience and hope – blooming when little else dares.

Member Lucy Lewis showed the club an app called Merlin which allows users to identify birdsong nearby.
