In a move that deeply honors the roots of Atlantic Beach, the town council voted unanimously at their most recent meeting to appoint Titus Leaks as interim town manager.
Leaks is a third-generation resident whose family legacy is literally etched into the foundation of the community. His grandfather, Leonard Evans, was the bricklayer who built Woods Villas, which is the town’s first motel.
This appointment feels particularly poignant following the recent addition of Woods Villas to the National Register of Historic Places, a milestone that Leaks helped celebrate last November.
For the residents of “The Black Pearl”, seeing a local with such profound ties to the small seaside enclave take the lead is a significant shift back toward community-centered governance.
The transition comes on the heels of a turbulent period for the town’s administration.
The council recently ended its relationship with Adrian Jones after a difficult one-year tenure marked by internal friction.
While Jones was originally under contract through 2027, the town agreed to a $10,000 settlement to facilitate his departure.
The unanimous vote to bring in Leaks was conducted without public discussion, but the underlying sentiment in Atlantic Beach has been one of desire for stability after a series of high-profile departures, including multiple police chiefs and ongoing legal questions regarding the council’s own composition.
