After a dominant start to the season for the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs boys soccer team, highlighted by a run of comprehensive victories to open region play, a bit of a reality check was always to be expected with a couple of tricky games on the schedule last week.

The North Myrtle Beach High sports complex recently received a makeover and an upgrade, courtesy of the county school board and local parents and supporters of the athletic program who wanted to see it continue the steady progress and positive momentum achieved in recent years.

Tony Heilbronn, the new athletic director this year for North Myrtle Beach High School, was hired after helping to take Darlington High School’s boys basketball program to three consecutive Lower State Championships, winning one, along with several regional championships.

The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs boys basketball team hosted the six-team Shootout By The Sea tournament this week in the gymnasium of NMB High School.

By John Smithson The #2 North Myrtle Beach Chiefs football team won the Lower State championship last Friday by beating rival Myrtle Beach 37-10 at the Hank Hester Sports Complex. The Chiefs remained undefeated with their ninth win and set up a championship game at Benedict College Saturday at 7:30 pm against upper state winner and top-ranked A.C. Flora. By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs won their second consecutive home football playoff 35-10 over North Augusta last Friday night and they will meet the Myrtle Beach Seahawks this Friday at the Hank Hester Sports Complex for the lower state championship. By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity girls cross country team won the 6AAAA regional championship last Saturday in Darlington.  The girls team had three runners in the top ten finishers to win with 59 points. West Florence was second with 75 points and Myrtle Beach third with 80 points. Kailyn Brown was the fourth-place finisher overall with Kayah Marques seventh, Isabel Smith 11th, Nia Ortiz 13th and Chandler Mury Riley 26th to lead the Chiefs point-getters.
