NMB XC teams ran at Bob Jenkins Classic

By John Smithson

The North Myrtle Beach varsity boys and girls cross country teams traveled to Newberry, S.C., last Saturday and joined runners from over 100 South Carolina schools competing in the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic 5K meet.

The Bob Jenkins Classic is held in memory of Bob Jenkins, who was a singular force in the development of cross country in South Carolina. He founded the SC Track and Field Cross Country Association, and the Association holds the meet to honor Jenkins’ contributions to the sport.

The Lady Chiefs team ran first on Saturday morning in the International girls race against many of the best runners in the state. The girls team finished in 32nd place out of 37 teams. Fenna Hollo finished in eighteenth place individually with a time of 19:20.78 over the 5K course.

Robin Walsh came in in 169th place at 22:20.57 and Ravyn Walsh was 181st at 22:46.70. Lucy Stalvey, Lane Tuitte and Sydney McClannan also ran for the girls team.

Four runners from the Chiefs boys varsity team also took part in the event. They ran in the Championship boys 5K. Peter Caugh came in 176th, Christopher Hardee finished 247th and Cale Hylton and Maximus Hayes also competed for the Chiefs.

The cross country teams had the Horry County Schools Championships 5K on Wednesday  at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. On October 29, the Chiefs return to the Sports Complex for the Region VI 5A Championships.
