Budding Ecotots are fast becoming good gardeners

By Mary Templeton It was a wonderful day in the neighborhood on Friday, Nov. 15. The ECOTOTS in Mrs. Holloway’s kindergarten class at Ocean Drive Elementary School learned they could bring a garden inside. With guidance from Graceann Phillips, several Yaupon Garden Club (YGC) members helped the students build their very own classroom terrarium. Each child was given an opportunity to add rocks, dirt and finally his/her plant to the terrarium.  They were immensely pleased with the completed project and will enjoy watching their plants grow throughout the school year.  In addition, Mary Templeton provided each student with a hands-on …

Green Sea Floyds Trojans one game closer to championship

With the lower state 1A championship in sight the Green Sea Floyds Trojans are ready for the big game against Lake View High School Wild Gators on Friday, Nov. 29, with a kick-off time at 7:30 p.m. at Luther Enzor Field. The Trojans played C.E. Murray High School War Eagles scoring 46-6 last Friday night which takes them one game closer to the championship game. Residents watch first Thanksgiving Parade

Loris Rehab and Nursing Center residents lined up to watch the first annual Thanksgiving Parade on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Director of Nursing Tracey O’Connell said, “The residents enjoyed the parade and seeing their smiles today was wonderful.”  Participants in the parade were Mayor Todd Harrelson, Loris Fire Department, Loris Police Department, The Loris Chamber of Commerce with Cluck Norris, the nursing staff, Loris High School Marching Lions, chorus, J.R.R.O.T.C. and Santa. Hanging the new LED Christmas lights

Tom Cocke, Joey Letts and Brandon Harrelson have been hanging the new LED Christmas lights throughout the city.  The new LED snowflakes were placed on the poles in the city last week.  Harrelson said there are more decorations coming and they are working hard to get them set up for the Christmas celebration and parade scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 9 p.m. in Loris.

God’s Gifts provides dinner to 150 local needy families

Stella McDowell created God’s Gifts in 2012 and has spent the last seven years helping people who need assistance with every day items.  God’s Gifts is a nonprofit community outreach program that depends upon donations of furniture, clothing, food and more to provide for people throughout Horry County. On Saturday, Nov. 23, McDowell and volunteers set up the community Thanksgiving dinner gifts for 150 families who were unable to afford a family holiday dinner.  Each family received a turkey, freshly grown collards and sweet potatoes, stuffing mix, vegetables and cranberry sauce. City of Loris employees can be seen painting the new street light pole in the foreground and others are installing a new pole in the background. The city will have Main Street lights up by next week for the Christmas season holidays. A new Christmas tree will be up at the courtyard on Main this week.

Register for Ocean Rescue Junior Lifeguard Program

Register now for the city’s January 21-March 12 Ocean Rescue Junior Lifeguard program at the North Myrtle Beach Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC). Classes are Tuesday and Thursday from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. at the center. The program focuses on people ages 9-15 who enjoy the beach and ocean, and who would like to learn water safety and lifesaving skills, including CPR, while also participating in fun games and activities. Chiefs end football season on road in second round

The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs varsity football season ended this past Thursday night on the road in the second round of the state 4-A playoffs to Myrtle Beach by a final score of 35-27. The Chiefs (6-5) led through most of the second, third and fourth quarters, but a late surge by the Seahawks put them ahead by one late, and then finished the Chiefs in the closing minutes.
