The Little River Elks have partnered again with the United Methodist Church Armed Services Assistance Program (ASAP). This program provides about $110 worth of food monthly to needy veterans in Horry County. Currently, there are from 52 to 63 veterans that participate in this food distribution program. It takes about $480 to support one veteran for one year. This vital program is essential to these veterans who can barely sustain themselves from month to month. Chocolate Chip performs free concert The public is invited to enjoy a free concert featuring Chocolate Chip on Thursday, Aug. 29, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Horseshoe on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. Concert-goers can expect an incredible show of Top 40 hits. Patrons and concert-goers are encouraged to bring their beach chairs. The free concert is part of the North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department’s Music on Main summer concert series sponsored by Coastal Carolina National Bank (CCNB).

The hydrology study has proven to be helpful in determining what the water and sewer department director, Brandon Harrelson, will focus on to prevent major flooding.  Last year residents on Forest Drive were disillusioned by the devastating flooding and destruction of their properties from the back-to-back hurricanes last September. Daisy Elementary saw a change in leadership at the beginning of the school year. Josh Todd welcomed students and staff as the doors opened for the first day of school for the students arriving on Monday, Aug. 19. He began his career as a classroom teacher at Aynor Elementary School and transitioned over to Palmetto Bay Elementary School as an instructional coach. Todd then moved to Kingston Elementary School as assistant principal. Last spring he applied for and accepted the position of principal at Daisy Elementary School. Early Sunday morning, Aug. 25, darkness veiled the entire city of Loris. First the electrical power dimmed lights starting at 2:15 a.m., the power completely went out minutes later. Lights throughout Loris were out, traffic signals were out. The street lights lining Main Street from Broad Street to Railroad Avenue were illuminating the street and stores. Hardee’s, NAPA and the convenience store at Board and Main had emergency lights shining inside the buildings. The generator at Hills Grocery Store was running keeping the power to the freezers going. The City’s Employee of the Month Award went to Database Administrator Matt Cayuela for creating a Parking Revenue Data Dashboard that provides quick visual analysis of revenue generated in each paid public parking lot and per space in a given location.

Prior to the August 19 North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Council members met in executive session to discuss possible appointments to the Construction Board of Appeals. Council took no action.  During the Council meeting, Mayor Marilyn Hatley presented a Proclamation declaring September 17-23 to be Constitution Week in North Myrtle Beach. Recently Oakboro, N.C., honored their heroes. This came about as a promotion spearheaded by Renee Poplin with the Oakboro Fire Department honoring the men from Oakboro who fought in World War II. Sgt. Wilson Hatley served in the United States Army Air Force as a crew chief on the B-24 bomber. His plane was named Frankie Ferocious. They flew 98 missions during World War II. His son, David Hatley of North Myrtle Beach, was in Oakboro recently and had his picture taken near his father’s banner in the town.
