The Election Commission met on Thursday, June 13, at 10:30 a.m. for the official announcement that Todd Harrelson is the new mayor of Loris.  It was official as Damon Kempski and Kenya Wright placed their signatures executing Election Commissions results. The Loris Library drew a crowd of children on Thursday, June 13, at 12 noon to make buttons for their dads for Father’s Day.  Tracy Collins provided patterns or blank circles of paper for the children to use vibrant pencils to make a colorful button.  Each child cut out the circle to fit the button, colored it and then Collins helped them to place the circle in the button maker.  There were happy faces and smiles during the event.  Dominique Lay said, “I love my daddy” as he presented his pin that said “Happy Father’s Day” Children from age three …

The Loris Chamber of Commerce held their quarterly meeting on Tuesday, June 18, from Noon to 1 p.m. at the McLeod Loris Health and Fitness Center. Samantha Norris, chamber director, welcomed everyone who came to the meeting and introduced guest speaker Wendy Gore, senior community services coordinator at Sea Haven.  Gore provided a brief background of Sea Haven and introduced the program Safe Place.  What is Safe Place?  It is a national youth outreach and prevention program for young people under the age of 18 in need of immediate help and safety.  As a collaborative community prevention initiative this program …

Noted conservationist and Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris is challenging families everywhere to put down their digital devices and head outside to discover the joys of fishing this summer. Morris, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are donating more than 55,000 rods and reels to not-for-profit partners that help kids from all backgrounds connect to the great outdoors to kick off Gone Fishing. William Odell Scales, 74, of North Myrtle Beach died on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in North Myrtle Beach. Born on Sept. 12, 1944, in Greensboro, N.C., he was the son of the late Robert H. and Dorothy T. Moore Scales. Mr. Scales is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley Ann Clark Scales; son, William Shane Scales; and sister, Maxie Hite (Tommy). Robert “Bob” Norman Stapleton, 79, of Loris passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019, at Embrace Hospice in Myrtle Beach. He was born on Oct. 23, 1939, in Rutland, Vermont, a son of the late Marshall Claire Stapleton and the late Helena Catherine Filipetti Brinker. Mr. Stapleton served his country with courage and honor as a Green Beret in the United States Army. After the military he worked with the New York State Police as a senior investigator until his retirement. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his companion, Gail T. Robert “Bobby”  Herbst III,  37, of Loris passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. He was born on July 9, 1981, in Stratford, N.J., the son of the Robert F. Herbst Jr. and Georgieann J. Sliwowski Herbst. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, stock car racing and football. He also loved to cook. Homer H. “Buddy” Harrelson Jr., 79, of Highway 9 Business West in Loris died on Friday, June 7, 2019, at his residence following an illness. Mr. Harrelson was born in Loris, a son of the late Homer Hamilton Harrelson Sr. and Maude Justine Williams Harrelson. He was the owner and operator of Buddy’s Kwik Stop in Loris.
