Fourteen members of the Driftwood Garden Club attended their April meeting at Joan Schuster’s home. Joan and Sandy Barker hosted and served, with contributions from Brenda Whitehead and Sherry Pfefferle, a lovely meal of baked chicken, salad and rolls. The desserts included strawberry shortcake and a layered pudding dish.

Lucy Lewis highlighted the April gardening tips. Marsha McCollum told the group facts about the daisy, the club’s flower of the month.

Babs Johnston announced six awards won by the club at the Coastal District meeting in Dillon. She also mentioned the plant swap that was held at the J. Bryant Floyd Community Center on April 22 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Several members attended. On Saturday, May 2, there will be a Native Plant Sale in Conway.

Linda Sweatt asked members to consider purchasing some new chairs for the therapy garden at the North Strand Community Home. She also mentioned the need to spruce up the gardens for spring.

Sandy Barker read the submission for the Driftwood Garden Club College Scholarship from a student of North Myrtle Beach High School. He is an impressive young man. The club unanimously approved a $1,000 scholarship for him.

Two “flutter, flutter” flower designs were present by Jill Roman and Jeanette Bell. Jeanette’s was a petite arrangement. Petites must be 5-8 inches tall, have the same effect as a large arrangement and be visually balanced. She also presented it in front of a black box to make it pop. Jill’s arrangement included red roses and various white flowers plus a butterfly, bee and ladybug. Jeanette Bell also presented a framed butterfly display that included butterflies from around the world and a butterfly mural that is painted on the exterior of a business in Loris. It was painted in memory of a young cancer victim from the area. Babs Johnston’s program included a fun contest matching butterflies with their host plants.

The ladies of Driftwood Garden Club also enjoyed the spring blooms of dogwoods and azaleas at Brookgreen Gardens this month. The outing included a visit to the new Purdy Center, full of tropical plants and orchids, the Rosen Galleries, Austin’s Harvest for a tasty lunch as well as strolls through the sculpture gardens. The weather couldn’t have been better.
