Army Corps of Engineers look to finalize $3.9 million Waccamaw River flood plan

By Ruben Lowman The battle to save Horry County’s rivers and adjacent infrastructure from catastrophic, chronic flooding events has received some good news this month. Major General Jason E. Kelly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations, bypassed the standard Pentagon briefing rooms to conduct an emergency, boots-on-the-ground site inspection of the Socastee River and the broader Waccamaw River basin to examine the causes of effects of a chronic flooding issue throughout all of Horry County. Escorted by Lt. Col. Todd Mainwaring, Commander of the USACE Charleston District, and Horry County Council Chairman …

Picnic Concert ends NMBHS performances on high note

By John Smithson While I usually use newspaper ink to summarize a variety of sports and athletic events, my attendance at the NMB High School’s annual Picnic Concert last Thursday evening once again gave me the opportunity to celebrate the school’s performing arts programs. While football and marching bands often go together, having an entire school’s performing arts department perform at The Hank on a warm spring evening is a challenge. That challenge was met and exceeded by the hundreds of talented performers who entertained an appreciative audience of parents and fans in the bleachers. The Director of Musical Theatre …

Red snapper season receives two month extension

By Ruben Lowman A sweeping federal policy shift has transformed the upcoming South Atlantic recreational red snapper season, expanding it from a historically restrictive two-day window into a robust two-month block running from July 1 through Aug. 31. Under an Exempted Fishing Permit authorized by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) will pilot a decentralized, state-led data collection program. The massive regulatory expansion, publicly championed by President Donald Trump as a decisive victory over federal bureaucracy, aims to replace traditional federal monitoring models with localized, real-time electronic reporting. The policy shift …

County approves budget, halts landfill expansion

By Ruben Lowman Horry County councilmembers have officially enacted a record-breaking $1.019 billion budget for the fiscal year 2027. Passing in an 11-1 vote at their most recent meeting on May 19, the budget represents a staggering increase from the previous year’s $869.9 million blueprint, while holding the baseline property tax rate flat at 52.1 mills. To offset rising operational costs, the county is instead implementing targeted fee increases for emergency medical services, code enforcement and planning and zoning actions. The sprawling fiscal package simultaneously funds a four percent across-the-board cost-of-living raise for its 3,441 county employees, adds 49 new …

Luxury rental houseboats test the waters in NMB

By Ruben Lowman In a vacation area where the short-term rental market is usually a tug-of-war between high-rise condos and sprawling beach houses, a new player has dropped anchor at Barefoot Landing Marina that doesn’t fit into any traditional zoning box. FLOHOM 15 Palmera and its sister vessel, FLOHOM 17 Selah, Sailor, have officially launched, marking the Grand Strand’s first foray into “stationary boat charters.” Owned and operated by local couple Tushar and Andrea Mukhija, these 848-square-foot luxury suites represent a significant gamble on “experiential hospitality.” While the vessels were contract-built in Baltimore, their mission is purely local, capturing the …
