Loris Elementary School held a parade on Friday, March 1, to celebrate and bring awareness in a fun way for children to want to read books. LES supports the National Reading Month every year with a new way to share interest in reading. This year they celebrated Dr. Seuss’ 114th birthday one day early. Because his birthday landed on a Saturday, all elementary schools promoted the program on Friday. Voters in Loris will select the successor to the late Mayor Henry L. Nichols in a special election to be held on Tuesday, May 28, with the winner filling the office for only the remainder of this year. According to Dena Huggins of the Horry County Registration & Elections Office, state law requires a special election to fill an unexpired term of office if, when the vacancy occurs, there are more than 180 days left in that term before the next general election. A celebration of life and a tribute for Mayor Henry L. “Buck” Nichols was held on Monday, March 4, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. at Loris First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Timothy L. Osment officiating. The pews were filled to capacity leaving standing room only with family, friends, council members, politicians and personnel who worked closely with Nichols. City workers, Loris Police Department and the Loris Fire Department represented the city’s mourning of a man who was loved by many. A surprise 100th birthday celebration was held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, for a McLeod Health Loris volunteer who was born when Woodrow Wilson was president. Hospital staff, physicians and administration gathered to celebrate Ms. Sallie Kapps with a 100 themed birthday party in the hospital cafeteria. “Mrs. Sallie is an inspiration to us all,” said Scott Montgomery, McLeod Loris Administrator. “She has a true servant’s heart and wonderful spirit.” Mrs. Kapps has been a volunteer at McLeod Health Loris since 1984. Loris Mayor Henry L. “Buck” Nichols passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at approximately 4 p.m. He had returned home from the hospital for two days before returning to The Loris McLeod Hospital emergency room. He was admitted to the I.C.U. department where he succumbed to his illness. Nichols was in his first term of office.
