Lady Chiefs win, but Chiefs lose Tuesday night By John Smithson North Myrtle Beach splits with Marlboro County Tuesday as the girls win and boys lose at the North Myrtle Beach High School gym. The Lady Chiefs started slowly in the first half, leading 6-2 after three minutes. Then Jordan Berger got hot, scoring 17 points in the first half to help the Lady Chiefs to a 28-13 lead over Marlboro County at the  intermission. The second half was more of the same. How the Ingram Dunes can be saved The Ingram Dunes are the heart of North Myrtle Beach and their unique beauty has been loved by locals and visitors for generations. The danger of having houses built on them is now more real and imminent. The Mighty Lion Award is given to a teacher or support staff member each month who has gone above and beyond in their job.  A nomination is made to recognize those who go beyond their job description to help others.  Thomasena Washington was surprised to receive this award,.“I do my job and never expected to receive this award,” says Washington.  Pictured left to right are Dr. Davis, Richard Crumley, Thomasena Washington and Josh Cutright.  The program began this school year to  bring recognition and appreciation to the staff at Loris High School.

A person’s identity is one’s outward appearance as it is what others see first.  Through the ages from Samson when Delilah cut off his hair weakening his strength to now as hair makes a statement about the person.  We have seen dreadlocks, crimped, curled, straightened hairstyles and some that make a person say ‘hmmm’.  Then there are those who have lost their hair due to an illness, especially women; they will wear scarves, bandanas and slouchy snoods and wigs. Rebecca Whiznant, a senior at Loris High School, decided just before Christmas 2018 that she was going to donate her hair.  …

The Ebony Garden Club in Loris was established in 1963. They are not as well known as the Loris Garden Club, but they do their due diligence in helping make their neighborhoods a prettier place to live. Melvina Lewis is the current president of the club. She has many great ideas and plans for 2019 in helping to bring in speakers and professionals to meet with the garden club. Winter Parker is a 2017 graduate of Loris High School who began studying at Coastal Carolina College majoring in Athletic Training with a double major in Psychology. All things were looking up for this 19 year old with ambitions and dreams. The dreams remain, however, delayed because of one fateful night in late April of this year when she and her boyfriend, Charles “Bo” Durant II, heard gunfire as they headed back to Bo’s parents home for dinner. The evergreen glow with twinkling lights with gifts wrapped and set underneath. Children race to see what good old Saint Nicholas has brought them on Christmas Day. This year there were no sad faces on Christmas morning due to the hard work of three generous souls and their volunteers. Johnny Lee, the Santa at the house on the corner, worked diligently gathering gifts for Toys for Tots. His tree was filled with gifts of all sorts to be wrapped and sent to children who might not have anything under the tree. Lee volunteers for the position of Santa each year …

Donald E. Wright, 79, of Little River died on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2018, with his family by his side. He was born on Oct. 21, 1939, in Columbus County, N.C., to George W. and Margaret Ward Wright. Mr. Wright was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He is survived by three daughters, Teresa West (Bill), Donna Spencer and Tina Wright; brother, Roger Wright (Shelby); and sister, Shirley Hilburn; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Lakeside Baptist Church in North Myrtle Beach. Visitation was from 10 …

Paul E. Weber, 93, of North Myrtle Beach died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born on Aug. 25, 1925, in Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Paul S. and Virginia Moore Weber. He was married to the late Ann Cornell Weber for 45 years. Mr. Weber served his country proudly during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps. In Greensboro, N.C., he founded in 1959 and operated Merchants and Manufacturers Supply, Inc. for 45 years. He was a ruling Elder in Sedgefield Presbyterian Church. Survivors include …
