Emergency ordinance implemented

By Kaye Collins

The Horry County Council declared a localized state of emergency to implement emergency ordinances addressing public emergencies that impact the life, health, safety, or property of residents in Horry County. This declaration will be in effect for a period of sixty (60) days unless it is terminated by a resolution from the County Council.

The emergency ordinance serves as a precautionary step, enabling the county to respond and coordinate actions if wintery weather conditions necessitate such measures.

Horry County was downgraded to OPCON 2 on Thursday, Jan. 22, as the initial forecast indicated the possibility of icy conditions resulting from rainfall and low temperatures. However, as the weekend unfolded, the situation evolved with no icy conditions observed. Horry County had no adjustments to the operations or activities. Sunday’s rainfall was predicted yet there were no adjustments due to the above-freezing temperatures. On Monday, Jan. 26, operations proceeded as usual.

As with any forecast relating to the weather there may be changes any time. The county recommends residents and visitors remain alert and to follow any public safety guidance from officials.

The weather forecast for Saturday, Jan. 31, indicates that Loris will face extremely cold conditions with a significant likelihood of wintry precipitation. The details of the forecast suggest a 35 to 40 percent chance of snow during the day, which will shift to partly cloudy skies in the evening. High temperatures are expected to be between 27 and 31 degrees Fahrenheit, while the lows will range from 16 to 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

In anticipation of possible impacts community members are reminded to take steps to prepare their households and neighborhoods. Check on friends, family, and neighbors. Ensure electronic devices are charged in advance of the arrival of winter weather. Have nonperishable food and water on hand. Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries if necessary. Follow all safety instructions for proper use of generators and alternative heating sources should you need them. Stay off the roads once winter precipitation starts falling. Ensure pets and livestock have proper shelter.

Residents are urged to keep an eye on social media for updates from Horry County Emergency Management, Horry County Government, Horry County Fire Rescue, and the Horry County Police Department.

As freezing temperatures persist this week, it is advisable to implement a few simple measures that can help reduce costs during this period, as the colder-than-usual weather causes heating systems to operate for extended periods. Lower your thermostat to the most comfortable setting. The smaller the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, the less energy you will consume and the lower the strain on your HVAC system. When possible, opt for a microwave or air fryer; both consume less energy compared to electric cooktops and ovens. Minimize standby power consumption by unplugging appliances and other electronic devices when they are not in use. Set ceiling fans to rotate clockwise to direct warm air down into the room. Keep drapes or blinds open on the sunny side of the house to let sunlight warm the interior, but close them at night to help insulate your home.
