Chiefs basketball teams head into region schedule

By John Smithson

The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity basketball teams have finished the “preseason” part of their 2025-26 schedule and now head into region 6-5A games this week.

The Chiefs boys team finished their non-region games last week at the HTC Invitational Tournament at Waccamaw High School. The Chiefs opened tournament play with a 41-39 win over Ragin Prep Christian Academy.

The Chiefs outscored the Rams 13-2 in the first quarter of the game and led 22-10 at halftime. However, Ragin responded with a 20-point third quarter to narrow the Chiefs lead to 31-30 after three quarters. The Chiefs then held on to win the game.

Eight Chiefs players scored in the game with Luke Barrett and Porter Anglin scoring eight points apiece. Anglin also had 10 rebounds and 4 blocks in the win.

The Chiefs next took on the home team Waccamaw Warriors and lost 51-29. The Chiefs scored two points in the first quarter and fell behind 18-12 at halftime. A five-point third quarter doomed any hopes of a comeback as the Warriors built their lead and won going away.

Primere Lewis led the Chiefs with 11 points, with the Chiefs offense 1 for 13 on three-pointers and 11 for 51 from the field total.

The Chiefs go into this week’s action with a 6-8 record and a young team trying to add more game experience and establish more consistency and confidence as they enter the tough part of their schedule.

The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs opened their region play on Tuesday at home against Conway, which comes into the game with a 5-8 record. The Chiefs travel to Socastee tomorrow night for a meeting with the 2-12 Braves.

The Lady Chiefs were 11-0 as they opened their region schedule at home Tuesday, also against Conway with a 3-5 record.

The Chiefs finished their holiday games with two more victories. On December 22nd the Chiefs beat Carvers Bay 55-21.

Madison Vereen led the Chiefs scoring with 18 points and 8 steals. Sophie Powell scored 14 points and Ke’Aisha Bryant added 12 points and had 8 steals and 6 assists.

Last Saturday the Chiefs beat Southeastern Christian Academy 73-33. Vereen scored 21 points and had 9 assists and 10 steals. Sophie Powell scored 14 points, and Aubree Anglin scored 10 points.

The Lady Chiefs are on the road tomorrow against Socastee who entered this week with a 7-7 record.
