On Saturday, Feb. 22, beginning at 11 a.m. the ballpark came to life with 12 softball teams arriving with coaches, family and local residents excited to see tournaments begin in Loris. Each age group played two games each on three fields. The 9th Annual Wigs for Cancer Gala, hosted by Marlisa Small, was held last Saturday at the Hilton on Beach Club Drive in Myrtle Beach.  Five hundred people were in attendance.  The proceeds from the event are used to assist people with cancer to have professional wigs to improve their mental and physical outlook on life while undergoing treatment for cancer. During the Monday, Feb. 17, North Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, Parks & Recreation General Concessions Manager Steven Martin was named Employee of the Month for February for his contributions to the success of the 2019 Great Christmas Light Show at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex. Martin planned, set up and operated mobile point-of-sale tablets used at The Great Christmas Light Show. This enabled staff to presell tickets to cars waiting in line before the gates opened. On June 2, 1996, 23-year-old Shawn Marie Neal was found deceased in a condominium at 3217 South Ocean Boulevard in North Myrtle Beach. An indepth investigation was undertaken by the North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety (NMBDPS) with assistance from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Despite the investigators’ best efforts, the case went “cold” and remained unsolved. In November 2017, relying on advances in investigative technology that include DNA collection and cataloging, NMBDPS investigators reopened the Neal investigation. The North Myrtle Beach boys and girls basketball teams both won their final region games last week and start 6AAAA playoffs this week. Both teams travelled to Marlboro County for their last region games of the season. The girls squad that beat Marlboro County 58-45 on Jan. 24 slipped by the Lady Bulldogs by a 63-58 score.  Jenna Berger led the scoring for the Lady Chiefs with 25 points. The match against Beaufort got off to a good start for the Chiefs as their 220-pound wrestler Clay Butler pinned Degin Lowery in :59. Malachi Black (285) then took only 47 seconds to pin Terrence Wilson and the Chiefs had a 12-0 lead. Catherine Josephine Atkinson of Longs passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, at home in the loving company of her family.   She was born on Oct. 29, 1925, in the town of Fork (Dillon County), S.C. on the kitchen table where she was known to everyone as the ninth child of 14 born to Dick Cleveland ‘D.C.’ Atkinson and Sarah Fleetwood ‘Fleety’ Carmichael. She became Josephine Livingston on April 10, 1943, when she married Joseph ‘J.B.’ Benjamin Livingston.
