President Phillis Newman welcomed the members of the Yaupon Garden Club to its regularly scheduled meeting held at the North Myrtle Beach Area Historical Museum. Following the inspirational meditation led by Lynne Payne, members feasted on the lunch prepared by hostesses Jolene Puffer, Linda Bump, Bette Hurt, Pam Maness and Susan Platt. The Horticulture presentation was a spooky arrangement of seasonal flowers presented by Belinda Roy who donned a witch’s hat for the occasion. Karen Melatti brought along a special treat: two caterpillars (larvae, soon to be chrysalis (pupa) of monarchs. Karen raised them from eggs.

The program was delivered by Jolene Puffer.  Her presentation focused on the establishment and maintenance of succulent plants. Jolene encouraged the members to start the easy-going plants as hospitality or get well gifts. They require very little maintenance and are quite easy to propagate.

Corresponding secretary Donna Belski read thank you notes from Joyce Metts, a Yaupon Garden Club life member, and Polly Lowman. Secretary Kathy Jenkins read the minutes of the last meeting followed by Treasurer Deb Madey’s monthly report. Member Phyllis Green proudly displayed the plaque that will be placed in her yard designating it as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Bette Hurt encouraged the club members who have not already received this recognition to make application. She enlisted the help of her husband, Gary, to build bird houses for the Red Wing Black Bird trail. Susan Platt gave a report on the status of a grant application to update the fence garden at the elementary school. Dorothy Bambach and Margaret Graham presented an update on the upcoming yard sale.  The next Ecotot meeting will take place on Friday, October 17, at the Ocean Drive Elementary School. Following a friendly round of ” Happy Birthday” to Karen Melatti and Jolene Puffer, the meeting was adjourned.
