Driftwood Garden Club members participate in events

By Jill Roman The Driftwood Garden Club has had a busy September. Members Babs Johnston, Trudy Sobolka and Linda Sweatt participated in the Plant Swap “Bring a Plant, Take a Plant“ event at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center Outdoor Courtyard. They shared plants and gardening tips with other local garden clubs and attendees at the event. South Carolina Master Gardeners gave a short presentation at the start of the event about Planting for Pollinators, with tips on plants that benefit the environment and our pollinator friends, the bees and butterflies. New friendships bloom at annual membership lunch

The afternoon was filled with friendship, fun and community spirit as members welcomed guests to learn more about the club and its mission of service. The event brought together members and eleven wonderful guests for an afternoon of light refreshments, lively conversation and laughter. Attendees enjoyed a fun game with a special prize for the winner and several lucky guests took home door prizes as part of the celebration. Oktoberfest to be held at Barefoot Landing on Saturday

On Saturday, October 4, starting at noon, people can enjoy German-inspired food and drink specials at participating restaurants with a purchased wristband ($10). Proceeds from the wristband will support the day-to-day operations of The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach. Emergency meeting results given

By Gianna Forbis The North Myrtle Beach City Council met in an emergency called city meeting on Friday, September 26, at 3 p.m. at the North Myrtle Beach City Hall. There were two items on the agenda: Declaration: Declaration of a State of Emergency for the City of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. (APPROVED). Ordinance: An Emergency Ordinance declaring that a localized State of Emergency exists within the City of North Myrtle Beach and authorizing the appropriate action to be taken in connection therewith. September Tree of Month selected

By Lauren Jessie The North Myrtle Beach Tree Board has selected a Pig Nut Hickory (Carya Glabra) as the September Tree of the Month. This tall tree is found near Hill Street and Amaron Court in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach. As autumn arrives, it will show its fall golden leaves. Pig Nut Hickories are native to the southeastern United States. They produce bitter nuts that are good for wildlife. Their strong wood is valued for fuel, tool handles, sporting goods equipment and agricultural implements.

Jack Thompson celebrates 75 years of photography

By James Pease II Jack Thompson Day was held on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m. at the Myrtle Beach Train Depot in Myrtle Beach. Friends of Jack Thompson gather together every year to celebrate his birthday. This year, Jack celebrated his 89th birthday alongside celebrating 75 years of his chronicling of Myrtle Beach’s history through the art of his photography. During the ceremony, numerous speakers spoke of their time knowing Jack Thompson. Mark Kruea was the emcee for the event. Barefoot Landing kicks off autumn with SeptemberFest

By Ben Freda Barefoot Landing is celebrating autumn with an array of events called WonderFall. The season kicked off with the 9th annual SeptemberFest, which was held on Saturday, September 20. Hay decorations made by Thompson Farms give Dockside Village an autumn decor. Attendees had the chance to be like winemakers during Duplin Winery’s 5th annual Grape Stomp, which was held on the lawn between Crooked Hammock and the playground. Public hearings scheduled for SC-31 extension

The S.C. Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold two public meetings for the proposed Carolina Bays Parkway (SC 31) Extension project. The project, which is part of RIDE 3, would extend Carolina Bays Parkway (SC 31) from its current location at SC 9 in Horry County, across the North Carolina state line to U.S. 17 in Brunswick County, North Carolina, near Shallotte. The proposed improvement is a multi-lane full access freeway partially on a new location.
