Chiefs basketball teams head into region schedule

By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity basketball teams have finished the “preseason” part of their 2025-26 schedule and now head into region 6-5A games this week. The Chiefs boys team finished their non-region games last week at the HTC Invitational Tournament at Waccamaw High School. The Chiefs opened tournament play with a 41-39 win over Ragin Prep Christian Academy. The Chiefs outscored the Rams 13-2 in the first quarter of the game and led 22-10 at halftime. Knights Of Columbus to sponsor youth free throw championship

By John Earnest All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2026 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at 1 p.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Middle School Gymnasium at 11240 SC-90 in Little River. The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions. Chiefs go 1-2 in Shootout by the Sea Tournament

By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs boys basketball team finished the Shootout by the Sea Tournament at NMB High School with a 1-2 record. The Chiefs opened tournament play on Saturday, December 20, against the First Baptist Hurricanes from Charleston, S.C. The Chiefs took a 15-12 first quarter lead and the teams were tied 22-22 at halftime. The Chiefs outscored the Hurricanes in the third quarter and led 36-33 going into the fourth quarter. High school wrestling: no flying leaps allowed

By John Smithson If your idea of wrestling is a ring with two muscled combatants throwing each other, chairs or punches, then you need to watch high school or college wrestling. The competition happens on a large mat with a circular “ring’ if you will, where two individuals of different weight classes try to better their opponent by takedowns, reversals or other moves to earn points or pin their opponent in three two-minute periods. Lady Chiefs take win over West Florence 56-11

By John Smithson The NMB Lady Chiefs varsity basketball team continued their undefeated record last Tuesday with a 56-11 win over West Florence at home. The Chiefs got off to a quick lead with two free throws, a steal, layup and plus-one free throw by Maddie Vereen for a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile the Chiefs defense and rare shooting attempts by the Lady Knights enabled the Chiefs to build a 23-0 lead and 23-3 score after the first quarter of play. Chiefs complete 2025 schedule

By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs boys basketball team completed the 2025 portion of their schedule with a win over West Florence and their annual Shootout by the Sea Tournament at home. The Chiefs started last week with a second meeting against West Florence. The Chiefs lost 41-33 at West Florence on December 2nd but played much better last Tuesday night and beat the Knights 66-59. Lady Chiefs undefeated with 7-0 record

By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach High School varsity basketball team remained undefeated after three more wins in last week’s non region schedule. The Chiefs opened their three-game schedule last Monday with a trip to West Brunswick High School for a rematch with the Lady Trojans, a team they played in their first game of the season and beat 71-13 at North Myrtle Beach. Boys basketball takes loss at West Brunswick

The Chiefs won their first three games of the season before dropping five straight games and a 3-5 record in non-region games. The Chiefs lost two of those games last week. They traveled to West Brunswick last Tuesday to play the Trojans. The Chiefs beat them in an overtime thriller in the first game of the schedule but knew it would be tough in the rematch. By John Smithson The North Myrtle Beach Chiefs varsity basketball teams start week three of competition this week, continuing non-region games and getting more experience for the schedule ahead. The boys team started the season with a 3-0 record but lost three games in a row and stand at 3-3. The Chiefs lost the final game of the Green Sea Floyds tournament and then last week lost 41-33 to West Florence on Tuesday at Florence. Athletic Hall of Fame inductions held last Saturday

By John Smithson The 2025 class of the North Myrtle Beach High School Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted last Saturday evening in the school auditorium. The Hall of Fame was established in 2014 to celebrate the accomplishments of former Chief athletes and honor others who have made significant contributions to the school’s athletic programs. A Hall of Fame committee annually selects new inductees and honors them each fall during an induction ceremony. Nine individuals and two former athletic teams were honored last Saturday.
