Dorris D. Harrelson, 94, of Tabor City, N.C., passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019. Born on July 30, 1924, in Loris, he was the son of the late H.Q. Harrelson and Minnie Harrelson. Mr. Harrelson was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a devoted Christian man who loved the Lord. Mr. Harrelson was easy going and had a kind heart. He enjoyed being outdoors, working in the garden, driving his tractor and working in his garage. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Vernelle F. Carolyn H. Blake of North Myrtle Beach passed away from cardiovascular complications and stroke. Carol was born in Bativa, New York, to the late Wallace and Helen Warren. The family soon moved to Dearborn, Michigan, and later Carol married her high school sweetheart, Gerry Blake. They moved to Southern California where she worked as a secretary while Gerry finished college. In 1962 they moved back to Michigan to raise a family of three wonderful children. As empty-nesters, Carol and Gerry relocated to North Myrtle Beach to enjoy their retirement in the sun and on the golf course. Carol was predeceased …

Last Thursday the high tide line was at colored umbrella.  Friday’s high tide line was about 250 feet of additional high tide beach.

The equipment on the beach was staying busy last Friday with the renourishing project going on in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle Beach.

Lillian Freeman, 16, of Little River, a student at North Myrtle Beach High School, has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Principal Trevor Strawderman nominated Lillian for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service. Freeman has contributed 200 hours to Salkehatchie Summer Service, a summer mission program in Bishopville, in the past two years. She has helped …

The Columbiettes of Our Lady Star of the Sea Auxiliary #7122 welcomed four new members at an installation ceremony on May 23 at Our Lady Star of the Sea in North Myrtle Beach. From church new members are Patty Nyikos, Sharon Hawk, Silvia Murrieta-Goldberg and Nancy Terrell. District Deputy Doris Couldron and President Ann Bauco welcomed them. The Columbiettes, the Catholic women’s auxiliary, is dedicated to helping the OLSS Knights of Columbus, the church and the community. The Loris mayoral election ended at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. The candidates and family members as well as their supporters filled the seats at the Public Safety Building where the Election Committee, Venson Powers and Melzetta Gore, opened the provisional boxes, tallied the votes for each candidate and announced the absentee votes. The candidates vying for mayor for the city were Jeannie Tyler-Fox, Joan Gause, Mike Suggs and Todd Harrelson. The Loris City Council met on Wednesday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Hall for the express purpose to discuss the audit from the year 2015-16. Present at the meeting were Joan Gause, Lewis Hardee, Todd Harrelson, Mike Suggs and Jan Vescovi; Terrence Hardee was not present.  Also present was Kenya Wright, city clerk and treasurer and Damon Kempski, city administrator.  Department Heads present were Brandon Harrelson, Tom Cocke, LPD Chief Gary Buley, LPD Lt. On Friday, May 24 Green Sea Floyds High School held its annual awards ceremony for their students enrolled in the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program. North Myrtle Beach Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10804 has been a part of this awards program for the last few years and has presented VFW awards to deserving students nominated by their Army instructors. Louise Maria Andrews departed us on Friday, May 10, 2019, after a lengthy illness and now is in the loving embrace of her Lord and Savior. She was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 3, 1926, and was the oldest of 10 children. She lived through the Dutch famine of World War II, which at times required her to cross the country on her bicycle in search of food. She met her future husband, Earl Andrews, during the occupation phase of World War II. They were married for 65 years. It has been said that Mom brought a wee bit …
